Painting a room can be done in a day or a weekend as long as you’re organized and have your selections complete. That’s the biggest issue when we decide to make a change to our home. The decision has been made but the colour selection can put a halt to our progress. If you’re looking for a timeless colour that you won’t be tired of by the end of the year, I’ve got you covered. This is a list of (some of) my favourite Sherwin Williams paint colours that are tried and true.
Tips For Picking a Timeless Paint Colour
1/ Stick With Classics
SOURCE: The House of Silver Lining
When you’re looking for a paint colour that will last for several years you want to stick with the tried and true classics. That means neutrals, both dark and light. We all know about light neutrals like beige, white, gray and taupe but did you know that neutrals can also include dark colours like slate, charcoal, navy and black?
Look for colours that have been used during other time periods. This is the true test of a colour. Can you find examples of it being used historically?
2/ Be Sure You Love It
SOURCE: Hello Lovely
Now that you’ve narrowed down the options based on good classics, it’s time to decide using your heart. Do you love this colour? Does it go with the rest of your space? At the end of the day you’re more likely to enjoy the colour if it’s something you genuinely love. Don’t be persuaded by anyone, even your designer, to paint your walls in a colour that you don’t truly love.
3/ Stay Away From Trends

When looking for timeless paint colours avoid colours that are trending. That includes the big announcement about any colour of the year from the various paint manufacturers. Those colours are great for those who like to stay up to date on the trends and are willing to change colours more often.
Timeless Paint Colours For Your Home
1/ Tricorn Black SW-6258
If you’re looking for a beautiful black that doesn’t throw off purple or blue undertones, give this a try. It’s a favourite among designers because it always delivers with the deep, saturated black and regardless of lighting conditions it looks consistently great.
2/ Iron Ore SW-7069
Charcoal truly is a classic paint colour and this one is perfection. This one has some blue undertones and you’ll see a change depending on lighting conditions. If your room is saturated with natural light you can expect to see more of a steel blue. As soon as the light goes down you’ll once again have the perfect charcoal colour.
3/ Greek Villa SW-7551
This colour could have alternatively been named vanilla milkshake because it’s decidedly white/cream with a strong yellow undertone. The colour is warm so it works really well in rooms with lots of light and also in rooms that tend to be darker. This colour will help to keep the temperature of the room feeling warm rather than cold and dreary.
4/ Alabaster SW-7008
If you think this colour looks a lot like Greek Villa you’re not wrong. The difference between the 2 is that Alabaster is a deeper shade with even more yellow undertones present. While it will typically read as white the exception is when you pair it with a strong white. For example, if your kitchen cabinets are painted in a “pure” white like Simply White from Benjamin Moore you’ll probably find that Alabaster takes on a yellow hue next to it. But in rooms where there isn’t a lot of white it’ll definitely read white.
5/ Snowbound SW-7004
This colour has a taupe and gray undertone which can make it a white with a bit of cool tone to it. As with all colours it can change with the surroundings. While you might pick this because it has the timeless white you’re after, other colours close by can bring out the gray undertones. Just beware before you commit to the colour.
6/ Sea Salt SW-6204
If you love the look of a classic Hamptons home you’ll love this colour. It has the sophisticated beach vibes that work well regardless of whether you live on the beach or not. It’s a green with a strong gray undertone and that’s what makes this a classic. It will never appear too green because of that undertone. Regardless of the light it’s not going to look like a colour that should be in a child’s room. It’s timeless and sophisticated!
7/ Repose Gray SW-7015
If a timeless gray paint is what you’re looking for you can stop the search. This lovely colour is warm and straddles the line between gray and taupe. It has definite gray undertones but it also has a bit of warmth and cream mixed in there. In my opinion this is a classic beauty that will never date. One of the best features of this colour is that there are no blue undertones regardless of the lighting conditions. That’s a big accomplishment in the world of gray paint.
8/ Charcoal Blue SW-2739
This warm navy has a lot going for it and in terms of classics, you can’t do any better if you’re in the market for a deep navy colour. There are some subtle purple undertones present so you get not just the lovely blue but a hint of warmth in the purple undertones. This one is truly a timeless classic and it pairs with other classics like gold, marble and any white or soft gray colours.
9/ Agreeable Gray – SW-7029
This beautiful taupe has been a favourite for many years with both designers and homeowners and always tops the charts for Sherwin Williams in terms of popularity. It’s also a colour that avoids being trendy and therefore will fall into a category of classics that can stand the test of time. If you love a neutral space with a lot of warmth you’ll love this colour. One of the reasons this colour has remained so popular is because of how dynamic it is. It adjusts easily to its environment and won’t cause clashing with any surrounding colours.
