Colours to Boost Productivity and Unleash Creativity in Your Home Office

If you can’t drive past the golden arches without being magnetically pulled in, there might be a good reason. Both red and yellow are colours known to stimulate appetite. Brands often study the psychology of colour when making their marketing decisions. They’re looking for a way to activate a need in you while you’re completely unaware.

Picking a paint colour can also do more than just stimulate our visual sense. There’s an emotional reaction to the colours we surround ourselves with. There are hidden benefits you may not even be aware of. This can help you select the right paint colour to achieve maximum productivity or creativity while you work.

WHICH COLOURS BOOST PRODUCTIVITY AND CREATIVITY?

1/ SOOTHE YOUR MIND WITH LIGHT BLUE

SOURCE: Kate Knowles Home

Blue is known to be an intellectual colour. That doesn’t mean you’re smart for liking it but rather that it’s associated with communication, efficiency and logic. If you’re easily distracted during your day and need an extra boost to focus, blue could be the right choice for you. This colour is known to boost productivity while allowing you to focus on your important work tasks. In fact, it’s said that blue is the most productive of all colours.

2/ YELLOW FOR INCREASED ATTENTION

SOURCE: Houzz

Yellow is known to be associated with memory and curiosity. If you struggle to retain information throughout your day, even a small dose of yellow might help you. There’s a secondary psychological benefit to yellow and that’s increased optimism and creativity. Sounds like the ideal colour for an office if you’re a creative person who struggles to stay on task (raises hand high).

Don’t be afraid to paint all the walls yellow. You just need a calm neutral like off-white to neutralize the bold colour. This also helps to avoid overstimulation that can come from some of the more saturated yellows.

3/ STIMULATE YOUR MIND WITH GREEN

SOURCE: Gillian Segal

If your normal workday is longer than most, add some green into your office. Green provides stimulation but it’s gentle as opposed to aggressive so you’ll focus for longer periods of time. Another reason green is beneficial is that it’s easy on our eyes. And lastly, it helps to reduce anxiety and since most of us experience stress and anxiety at work this will act to calm your nerves.

4/ BRING POWER TO YOUR DAY WITH BLACK

SOURCE: Studio McGee

A lot of us might be afraid to paint a room black for fear that it’ll feel cave-like. The psychology of colour tells us that black actually stands for power and control. If you need to be taken seriously and be seen as a person in a position of authority, black can work in your favour.

Black is also highly associated with luxury. If your work involves products or services that you want to be perceived as luxurious, give black a try.

5/ BROWN FOR PROFESSIONALS

SOURCE: Elle Decor

If black is a bit too much for you, consider brown. It evokes the same feelings of power to a space but it also represents professionalism. Along with that, it’s a colour that helps with focus, attention and serenity. These are all common traits of professionals so clearly brown is doing its job.

6/ CALM DOWN WITH PINK

SOURCE: Sherwin Williams

Did you know that some prisons use pink to keep inmates calm and orderly? If it can work in prisons, there’s a good chance it’ll help you stay calm during your stressful days. Pale pink can also elicit feelings of creativity and inspiration. That means you’ll be calm and focused just by adding pink to your walls.

7/ KEEP YOUR OFFICE CLEAN WITH WHITE

SOURCE: Benjamin Moore

White is linked to feelings of cleanliness and purity. That doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly feel inspired to keep your office clean (although you might). It means it can limit the visual distractions around you. If you really want to create your own customized environment try painting the walls white and then adding in accent colours that help boost productivity. 8/ BRING LUXURY TO YOUR WORK WITH PURPLE

SOURCE: Decorpad

Purple is a regal colour that’s associated with luxury. If you own a business or brand that focuses on luxury you might want to give purple a try. The added bonus to using purple is that it can create a feeling of wisdom and who doesn’t want to be viewed as wise when at work?!

If you’re prone to distraction you should consider painting your office in a greige tone. This colour removes visual distractions and allows you to focus more deeply while keeping your mind calm and centred.

10/ INSTIL CONFIDENCE WITH NAVY

SOURCE: Life On Virginia Street

You know I wouldn’t let a colour post go by without mentioning my favourite, navy blue. Navy suggests authority and reliability so if you’re in a leadership role you should consider this colour for your office.

Have you ever noticed how many brands have blue in their marketing? It’s for exactly this reason. They want to seem like the authoritative leader in their category. Even if you’re not a boss but aspire to be someday, this will be a good choice for you.
