Colour of the Month – Sherwin Williams Sea Salt

What colour comes to mind when you think of a spa day? I immediately think of the light green-blue colours that are reminiscent of water and sky. There are a few paint colours that come to mind when I search for this type of colour. If you’re old enough to remember the time when Restoration Hardware was selling paint then Silver Sage probably rings a bell. I also grab for Benjamin Moore’s Smoke but nothing comes close to evoking that spa-like feel more than Sherwin Williams Sea Salt does.

Why I Love This Colour

SOURCE: Amanda Katherine Interiors

Some rooms in our homes should feel like a sanctuary from the noise and chaos of the outside world. We want to return home each day and feel like we can let go of whatever issues have arisen over the day. For me that’s a bedroom but for some it’s a bathroom with a big tub or a yoga room for meditation.

Any space in your home can be transformed into a tranquil, peaceful retreat and it always includes an amazing colour on the walls. Sea Salt will transform any space into a calm and peaceful spot because it evokes calm and tranquil vibes.

Is There an Undertone?

SOURCE: Simplee DIY

This is a complex colour that begins as a muted green with blue undertones. You’ll see it change throughout the day as the light changes but it can take on hues of both green and blue.

It also leans towards gray so certain lighting conditions (evening or poorly lit rooms) may bring out more of the gray side of this colour. As always, check your paint in morning, afternoon and evening light so that you know exactly what the paint colour looks like at different times of day.

Will Sea Salt Work In Your Home?

If you’re looking to add a colour that will create a calm and peaceful space this colour will work. Lighting plays such an important role in how this colour appears so consider your conditions before you run out to the paint store.

When natural light is strongly making its way into your space you’ll see this paint colour read like a soft green. Once the light becomes more neutral like an early evening light you’ll see the green transform into a soft blue and by late evening you’ll be seeing those gray tones peaking out.

Trim Colours to Use With Sea Salt

This colour is truly gorgeous but it needs to be paired correctly in order for it to maintain its soft, calming presence. Both white and cream are excellent colour choices for trim colour to work alongside Sea Salt.

If you prefer a crisper, cleaner look then go for a pure white but if you prefer something a little softer then off-white will work. If you’re using off-white I would recommend something that feels like a very soft gray to work with the gray undertones already present in Sea Salt.

1/ Pure White SW-7005

This is one of the most popular white paint colours at Sherwin Williams so you know it’s doing something right. This is the brightest of the 3 options so if you’re looking for a white that will add some brightness to your space, give this a try.

2/ Extra White SW-7006

This white has a very, very subtle blue undertone contained within so if you find your test sample of Sea Salt pulling out the blue undertones a trim colour like this will be a perfect pairing.

3/ Snowbound SW-7004

If the light in your space is limited and you’re using Sea Salt you’ll likely see some gray being cast from it and Snowbound will be a perfect pairing. It’s got some very subtle gray undertones which will work with Sea Salt rather than having opposing undertones that fight each other for dominance.

Best Colours to Pair With Sea Salt

1/ Fleur de Sel SW-7666

If you still have leftover furniture pieces or flooring from the gray era, Sea Salt is a perfect paint colour to modernize the gray. Gray had a strong moment but over the last couple of years we’ve replaced the gray with a softer, warmer cream and beige palette.

One of the best ways to update an outdated colour is by pairing it with something that feels similar but de-emphasizes the strength of the original colour. In this case, Sea Salt and Fleur de Sel both have a green base that can lean towards gray. This will help to make the gray more intentional and it will look more timeless.

2/ Charcoal Blue SW-2739

I absolutely love the strong contrast between these two colours and yet there’s something so harmonious at the same time. If you want a power duo these two are going to give it to you.

3/ Pewter Green SW-6208

I think there’s such a powerful effect when we use a single colour in varying shades. In this case both the light and dark greens work so well together and create a really strong unifying colour palette.

Just as we talk about monochromatic dressing in fashion the same rule can apply when it comes to coordinating paint colours. This is a timeless and elegant look so never be afraid of using multiple shades of the same colour.
