Summer is quietly slipping away and before you know it we’ll be wrapped in warm sweaters and cleaning up leaves from our yard. What is it about fall that makes us want to fill our home with deeper, more saturated colours? There’s something cozy about these rich, warm colours that draws us in and makes us want to snuggle up and just start the nesting process of fall and winter.

If this sounds like you and you’re looking for a warm but dramatic paint colour you’ll definitely want to learn about Night Owl from Sherwin Williams. This colour is a wonderful combination of green and charcoal and is a moody but exciting hue.

Why I Love This Colour

SOURCE: Home Bunch

I love this colour because it feels so versatile and I think it truly works in so many styles of home. I would use this in a brand new condo or a timeless, traditional space. While clients often want to avoid a specific colour like green in favour of a neutral colour, this green feels more like a neutral than a defined colour.

I particularly love this colour when it’s paired with wood, either flooring or furniture. While this is technically a cool colour it seems to present as warm when used alongside wood.

It’s often hard to find a paint colour that works well with wood but this one works perfectly. I think this is a great colour for those homes with the old shade of orange wood because that can be a tricky wood stain to match with a paint colour. This paint colour will update the orange stain and give the space a more updated look and feel

Is There an Undertone?

SOURCE: Pinterest

I’ve already mentioned the green and charcoal but Sherwin Williams describes this as having undertones of cyan which gives it a subtle blue hue. I think it’s the combination of these three colours that create that perfect moody feeling.

It’s unlikely that you’ll ever really see the blue undertone of this paint colour but as always, check your paint in morning, afternoon and evening light so that you know exactly what the paint colour looks like at different times of day.

Will Night Owl Work In Your Home?

If you want to add some drama to your home but in a way that doesn’t feel like you’re trying too hard I recommend a dark neutral like Night Owl. These colours are bold and can create a feeling of warmth but without being too loud.

I especially love a colour like this in a space where there is a lot of artwork to be highlighted. We may expect white to be the best colour to display art (it definitely works) but a dark neutral is also a great backdrop for art so if you’re an art collector you should definitely consider Night Owl.

Trim Colours to Use With Night Owl

Don’t use stark white or anything too crisp and cool alongside Night Owl. Even in a more modern space I would lean towards creamier, warmer whites to continue the warm cozy feeling created by Night Owl. A cool white may make this colour lean too far towards the cool side of the spectrum and this can leave your home feeling cold, particularly during winter months.

1/ Reserved White

I think this is such a great combination of colours because they both have the same green undertones which creates a strong harmony between colours.

2/ Drift of Mist

If you want something different than white you might find this soft gray does the trick. It’s a very pale gray that will often read as white but it will lend warmth to the space.

3/ Pure White

This is one of the most popular white paint colours at Sherwin Williams so you know it’s doing something right. This is the brightest of the 3 options so if you’re looking for a white that will add some brightness to your space, give this a try.

Best Colours to Pair With Night Owl

1/ Grassland

I love this combination because these two colours have a green base that works seamlessly together. If you ever practice the monochromatic dressing technique you’ll know that various shades of the same colour always have a way of working together and looking effortless. This is a prime example of how well this can be done to achieve unity amongst colours.

2/ Toasty

If you’re looking for a combination that includes a much greater contrast this one is for you. This looks like a timeless colour combination and will work together to create a sophisticated appearance anywhere in your home.

3/ Carnelian

This might feel bold and dramatic and truly it is. This deep, bold combination would be great for rooms that benefit from a moody palette. I would use this in a powder room or a dining room or even a transitional space like a mud room. These colours together feel majestic and will never be outdated.

My Final Words on Night Owl

I truly think Night Owl is a great colour that can work in almost any room in any home. It’s dark but not overwhelming and will feel moody and bold all while feeling like a big, warm hug. If you do try it out in your home let me know your thoughts.
